It depends on the original installation. The solar industry started out with some good guys and a lot of cowboys.
The cowboys were busy installing sub-par and sometimes unsafe solar systems. Because it was not compulsory for a third party to inspect Brisbane solar installations, many cowboys got away with poorly designed and underperforming solar installations. Unfortunately, we still don’t have mandatory solar inspections in Brisbane. Plenty of bargain basement companies still get away with poorly designed, non-compliant and underperforming solar systems on Brisbane homes.
If you are looking at just upgrading your solar panels to a higher wattage panel and keeping the rest of the system, I would recommend against it.
The reason is that your current solar installation will not be compliant with today’s standards, so you will not be able to claim a rebate on your new solar panels unless you change the whole system, including the inverter. Additionally, using your existing railing and wiring with a new set of panels is likely unfeasible, or it will take more time than installing with new rail and wiring. This means a “patch job” of your current solar system will cost about the same as a brand-new system with a brand-new warranty.
In theory, it is possible to add extra panels to your existing solar inverter. However, in most cases, you will come across practical problems.
Most solar systems are installed with 33 per cent more panels than the inverter nameplate rating. So if you have a 5kW inverter, you will likely have 6.6kW of solar panels. Installing more solar panels will be non-compliant, but it will also likely work your old solar inverter too hard, bringing it to an early grave.
If your system is not oversized by the regulated maximum of 33 per cent, and you have more roof space, then it is possible. However, you will need to get a matching solar panel (most likely second-hand), have roof space to install it, and make sure that you do not go over the voltage or current rating of your inverter. However, technically speaking, second-hand solar panels will most likely be non-compliant by today’s standards.

Too easy.
Don’t worry, it’s no obligation and no hard sell.
It’s up to you. Our preference is to visit your home to understand your property and discuss your energy needs. But if you prefer, we can just provide a “desktop quote”. Our consultants are always happy to explain as much or as little as you’d like to know about solar.
A critical part of a high quality solar installation is sending an electrician out to “measure up” before install day to ensure everything runs smoothly. With a measure up, we guarantee you’ll get what you expected. No surprises. Just the best solar install possible.
What’s the most important aspect of any solar installation? The blokes on your roof. We don’t use subcontractors (meet our experienced, long term team on the “our team” page.) We’ll do a professional install, show you how it works, and clean up with a smile.
