If you are looking to store your excess solar power for use at night, Tesla’s Powerwall is the real deal. It’s a beautifully designed battery, but more importantly, it’s designed to last.
The biggest issue with any battery is the heat it produces when charging and discharging. The better the heat is managed in a battery, the longer the battery will last. At best, other solar storage batteries will use a fan to cool the batteries down. Tesla’s battery, on the other hand, uses what they call “active cooling” and pumps a liquid coolant around the cells that make up Powerwall. It is the active cooling that is the reason the warranty can be so generous: a full 10-year warranty with unlimited cycles. This warranty is not matched by any other battery in the industry.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Tesla Powerwall 2 is so beautifully functional. The founder of Tesla, Elon Musk (amongst his many other achievements) is responsible for sending the first commercially funded vehicle to the International Space Station. His electric Tesla Model 3 car is now commonplace on our streets. Mr Musk knows a thing or two about engineering for quality.
Increasing self-consumption of solar power generation.
The problem with solar is night-time. It’s not worth sending your power back to the grid for as little as 6 cents only to buy it back at night for 32 cents. At its simplest level, the Tesla Powerwall 2 solves this problem by storing excess solar electricity during the day so you can use it at night. As the Tesla Powerwall 2 price has reduced so much in the last 12 months, the economics are starting to stack up, especially if you sign up to be part of a Virtual Power Plant.
A Tesla Powerwall can allow you to be part of a bigger solution and get paid for it. Occasionally, wholesale electricity prices go negative in the middle of the day, so you can get paid to charge your battery. In the evening, wholesale power prices can reach as high as $15 per kWh! At these times, it is worth having a fully charged battery and allowing your retailer to pay you to discharge it into the grid. VPPs are a rapidly moving part of solar batteries. PEAK DEMAND SAVINGS
Brisbane is rapidly adopting peak demand electricity charges. Here’s a common example of a peak demand charge:
5kW x 25c x 30 days = $37 per month.
If you had a Tesla Powerwall 2 installed, you could set it to start discharging from 4 p.m. and cover your load until 9 p.m. Then your peak demand charge is $0.
Admittedly, 25c/kW is on the higher end of peak demand charge. However, choosing a plan with a high peak demand charge will open you to a plan with lower T11 usage charges. Another way that the Tesla Powerwall can save you money.
In a blackout, you’ll be glad you have a Tesla Powerwall 2. A generous 13.5kW of backup power will be enough to get you by when the grid is down. Make sure a backup power option is included when quoted on a solar battery.
As an AC-coupled battery, Powerwall 2 is suitable for retrofitting any new or existing solar system with any brand of solar inverter. While the Powerwall has a built-in inverter, it does not replace your existing inverter that is connected to your solar panels. Your existing solar inverter is still required to change (or invert) the power from the solar panels from DC to AC. The inverter in Powerwall 2 is designed to change the AC from your solar inverter back to DC, so you can charge your battery.
