Solar has come a long way in the last 2 years. No one would have predicted it’s success. But can you have too much of a good thing? Well it appears the government thinks so. The title of this blog is inaccurate. It’s not actually a “rebate” you get when you install solar today. Technically you are creating and selling Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). The government (or the taxpayer) does not pay for this. In other words, companies like ORIGIN, AGL, and Click – Or whoever it is that charges you to switch your light on – have to pay to support renewable energy. “Ah”, you say, “But that is the taxpayer, cause the taxpayer pays electricity bills!” Well, Yes. Indirectly, in the end, you pay. “Ah, That’s why my power bills are going through the roof!” Um, No. It adds about 3 percent to your bill. If you have a $1000 bill, that’s about 30 bucks a quarter. Several months ago the government appointed a bunch of coal miners to conduct the review of the renewable energy target. An unfortunate juxtaposition.
